Pictured here is the magnificent 1991 5 Kilo Gold Panda 10th Anniversary coin. This massive five kilogram coin is of proof quality and is certified to contain 99.9% pure gold. It measures 150mm in diameter and was struck with a mintage of just 10 pieces at the Shenyang Mint. The face value is 10,000 yuan. The coin was issued in 1991 as part of a three-coin set celebrating the 10th anniversary of the issuance of the Panda series, which was initiated in 1982.

To celebrate the 10 years of Panda coins, the design on the reverse face features a ring of images of 10 Panda coins from history, one from each of the years 1982 to 1991. This petal-like ring of interlocking coins surrounds an inner circle containing an image of the iconic and highly-endangered panda bear, which is depicted playfully eating a bamboo plant. Also contained within ring is the face value, 10,000 yuan, inscribed to the right of the panda; while below and to the left is an inscription detailing the impressive metallic properties of the coin.

The obverse face features a central image of the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests at the Temple of Heaven in Beijing. Completed during the early Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) in 1420 AD, the temple was visited every year by the Ming and Qing emperors at the winter solstice to pray to Heaven for a good harvest. A good harvest would indicate that Heaven still granted its mandate to the Emperor, therefore ensuring the political stability of the empire and the happiness of the people. Surrounding the central image is a foliage motif and two inscriptions. Around the top edge is struck: “The People’s Republic of China”. Underneath, around the bottom edge, is inscribed: “10th Anniversary of the Issuance of Gold Panda Coins”.
