Description

The coin is one of the twelve lunar coins honoring one of the animals of the Chinese Zodiac. This coin was created in 1993, the Year of the Rooster, and on the reverse, the image honors the animal itself. This coin is a 99.95% pure, platinum, one ounce coin. In 1993, 300 of these coins were authorized for production by the Shanghai Mint. Twelve different designs, one for each animal of the zodiac, were created between the years of 1988 and 1999. All of the sets each contain a set of gold, a set of silver, and one platinum coin.

The obverse of the coin showcases the Emblem of China, adopted in 1950, just after the end of the Revolution. The Emblem is a rendering of the Tiananmen Gate, the main entrance to the Forbidden City. Above the Tiananmen Gate appear five stars. The center star represents the Chinese Communist Party, and the four surrounding stars represent the four social classes of China, as outlined in the ìBloc of Four Social Classes.î Around the Gate of Heavenly Peace are sheaves of rice and wheat, the agricultural products that fueled the people and the revolution itself. The year of production is at the bottom of the obverse, above which appears the combination of Chinese characters that translate to, ìThe Peopleís Republic of China.î

On the reverse face of the coin is an exact copy of the famous illustration, ìPainting of a Pair of Chickens,î by Liu Kuiling (1885-1968). Kuiling was a reputed Northern Chinese painter, who grew up in the countryside. He was heavily influenced as a realistic painter by art typical of the late Qing Dynasty. The painting shows a rooster and hen together. The chicken stands in the foreground, and the rooster behind her. To the right of the hen and rooster is a large flower. Above the rooster appear the specifications of the metallurgic properties of the coin: ìcontains .9995 Pt, one ounce pure platinum.î

The rooster symbolizes hard work and loyalty in Chinese culture. The people born in the Year of the Rooster are said to be honest, trusting and loyal. They are also organized, yet enjoy being in the spotlight. They are extroverted and may be seen to show off.
