This 1993 Chinese silver rooster coin is comprised of twelve ounces of silver that is .999 in fineness. This coin was exclusively minted at the Shanghai Mint which authorized a mintage of 500 coins. Along with possessing a face value of 100 Yuan, this coin is 80mm in diameter. The reverse side of the coin depicts a scene of two roosters. The opposite side of the coin displays a view of a pagoda.
The side of the coin commemorating the rooster shows a scene of two of them; one at ground level, the other perched atop a large rock. Underneath the rock is a patch of grass creeping out from under. According to the Chinese zodiac, those born on Rooster years are thought to be quite observant. Therefore, as the roosters are depicted facing each other, one may say they are “observing” each other’s different height. The right side of the coin is decorated with two columns of Chinese characters, while at approximately ten o’clock on the coin two other Chinese characters are visible. Below these two characters is the number 100 followed by the Chinese character for the Yuan.
The obverse side of this coin depicts a pagoda whose architecture is often seen in Xi’an Province. This pagoda’s most prominent feature is its style of stairway leading the second story of the structure. There are two sets of stairs running away from each other while meeting at their destination, thus forming a diamond shape. The scene illustrates the three-story building with its noticeable spire on top along with two small trees on either side. Arching across the top of the coin are the Chinese characters standing for the People’s Republic of China. On the bottom of the coin, slight off center toward the right reads the year of its make, 1993.
