Description

The coin shown is one of nine peacock coins issued in 1993 as part of a series featuring ancient Chinese paintings. Five of the coins issued in 1993 are gold and four are silver. The obverse of the coins in this series show an image of the Hall of Supreme Harmony of the Forbidden City in Beijing. Above this image is the inscription in Chinese characters: “The People’s Republic of China”. Below the image is the year of production, 1993.

The Hall of Supreme Harmony is the largest of all the halls in the Forbidden City or Imperial Palace of Beijing and was the place where Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1912) dynasty emperors would hold their wedding and coronation ceremonies. The Forbidden City was constructed towards the start of the Ming dynasty between 1406 and 1420 following the collapse of the Mongol led Yuan dynasty (1271-1368).

The reverse of all the coins in the group feature a painting of peacocks by Guiseppe Castiglione (1688-1766) entitled “Picture of Peacock Displaying Tail Feathers”. The painting depicts two peacocks surrounded by trees. One peacock is shown impressively displaying his feathers, while the other stands in the foreground looking on. The denomination is inscribed above and to the left of the image.

Guiseppe Castiglione was an Italian Jesuit missionary in China during the Qing dynasty. Coming to China in 1715, he took the Chinese name Lang Shining and painted at the court of the Emperor Qianlong (reigned 1735-196). His work was characterised by a combination of European style with Chinese themes and techniques.

This is the 1500 yuan, 20 oz gold coin of the series. It is a proof coin with a fineness of 99.9% and has a mintage of 66. The coin has a diameter of 90mm. The bottom edge of the reverse face bears an inscription pertaining to the specifications of the coin. It reads: “20 oz Au .999”.
