Seen here is the Year of the Dragon coin struck in 2000 which forms part of a complete set of twelve 1/2 oz gold coins produced between 1993 and 2004 which celebrate the Chinese zodiac animals. The coins in this set are all scallop-shaped and each one features the animal corresponding to the year of production of that coin.

The coin is certified by the Bank of China to be of proof quality. Distributed by the Shenyang mint with a mintage of 2,300, the 1/2 oz Year of the Dragon gold scallop coin is 27mm in diameter, has a purity of 91.6%, and has a denomination of 100 yuan.

Depicted on the obverse of the coin is a rendering of the Five Pavilion Bridge at Yangzhou. Built in 1757 and spanning Slender West Lake, the bridge is 55m in length and features five pavilions arranged in a symmetrical pattern, the central pavilion being higher than the surrounding four. Below the rendering is the year of issue. Around the top edge of the face is inscribed in Chinese characters: “The People’s Republic of China”.

The design on the reverse face is by an unknown artist. It depicts a flying dragon over rough waves playing with a pearl. The dragon’s powerful snaking body dominates the coin face. The face value of the coin appears in the bottom right corner of the reverse.

Dragons hold a special place in Chinese culture. The Chinese call themselves the “Descendants of the Dragon” and have adopted the dragon as their national totem. It is the most powerful of all the creatures and is the only mythical animal in the Chinese zodiac. It is a symbol of pure power and might, and is a sign of prosperity and success. Fearless in the face of challenges and highly ambitious, people born in the Year of the Dragon are great achievers and risk takers. They often help others but never seeking help for themselves. People who have the dragon as their zodiac sign are considered truly fortunate in Chinese culture.
