Seen above is one of a series twelve coins celebrating the animals of the Chinese zodiac in Chinese culture. The coins making up this series are all brilliant uncirculated 1/2 oz gold coins of 99.9% purity and are a peculiar fan-shape. Starting with the Year of the Dragon in 2000 and ending with the Year of the Rabbit in 2011, the reverse faces of the twelve coins feature the animal in the zodiac corresponding to the year of that individual coin and the coin’s face value. On the obverse faces is the inscription: “The People’s Republic of China”, below which is the year of production and an image of a different section of the Great Wall.

This is the 2005 Year of the Rooster coin of the series. Its face value is 200 yuan and its mintage is 6,600.

Appearing on the reverse face is a picture of a family of chickens including a rooster, a hen, and three chicks. The rooster and hen look on as the chicks scuttle around at their feet. The face value appears above and to the right of the picture.

The rooster is a symbol of honesty and vigilance in Chinese culture. It is a proud and flamboyant animal, and those born with the rooster as their sign can’t resist a chance to exhibit their many talents and let others know their achievements. These achievements are well-earned though, as those born in the Year of the Rooster are often hard-working, meticulous individuals.

The part of the Great Wall appearing on the obverse face is the Juyongguan section. Situated just over 50km from Beijing, it is the section of the wall that lies closest to the capital. An important strategic pass, Juyongguan is built in a rough circle with two passes, one to the north and one to the south. Badaling, the most popular section of the Great Wall among tourists, is the northernmost of these two passes.
